Bible and Current World : Rape

Rape of a woman is one of the worst crime that a man can commit against woman. That man had taken something that doesn’t belongs to him. He has become a oppressor of his own kind. He has become selfish.

Similarly in today’s world a man is raped more than woman but seldom reported in the media. Here the major oppressor is the man himself.

The rape victim is devastated. It’s a completed devastation of the victims world innocence.  The victim is completely scared for life.

What does Bible say about the rape ?

Psalms 82:3

Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.

Here the victim is the afflicted. We are to defend the afflicted.

Psalms 9:9

The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.

Here that victim is the oppressed. God is the refuge for them.

Psalms 72:4

He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.

The oppressor will be crushed by the Lord.

Exodus 22:16-17

16 And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife.

17 If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.

Here a man entices the maid to whom he is not betrothed. Here the woman got entices. Both of them had sex before marriage.

Even in the Moses days the man in this case was suppose to marry the women and stay with her for the whole life. In case that the father of the girl refuses for the marriage. The man should pay the price for what he did.

In today’s world the woman could go the next day to police and file a rape case against  the man. Even though she also got enticed and now she feels that she was taken advantage of once the ecstasy of being enticed had gone.

In today’s premarital sex is know as a common thing and praised about. All the media, movie, all the entertainment promotes this.

The man and the woman have equal responsibility for their actions. They are punished accordingly.

Deuteronomy 22:23-24

23 If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her;

24 Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbor’s wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you.

25 But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die.

Here the man lie with a woman who is not his wife. They probably meet for a casual drink in the city. Both got drunk and it happened.  Did the woman give  a consent to sleep with this man. Yes, she did because she did not cry and get away. She did not call for help. Being drunk doesn’t provide you a easy escape of not being responsible of your action. Whats the punishment both of them should be stoned to death.

What happens in today’s world. The woman will go to police a next day. File a complaint saying she did not consent for the sexual act got raped. The drink and rape doesn’t go together.  Why was the woman drunk on her own will at the first place. The man will be hunted down by the police. The man is persecuted but the woman goes out free. Free to have a casual drink again and get raped again.  The man likewise instead of loving his wife starts loving with the neighbor’s wife.

In Verse 25. If a man forces himself on a woman in the fields. She cries for help but there is no one to save her. This is indeed a rape. The woman here is sober. But she was taken advantage of by a man for his own selfish purpose. The punishment he should be put to death by stoning.

Again, the man and the woman have equal responsibility for their actions. They are punished accordingly.

Deuteronomy 22:28-29

28 If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found;

29 Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.

Here in this case where the man has had a sexual relation against the will of woman. He did raped her. He has taken to himself something that doesn’t belong to him.
